NYU Langone’s Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery offers a two-year Vascular Surgery Fellowship through NYU Grossman School of Medicine. The program, which is pursued after residency training in general surgery, prepares trainees to function independently as outstanding qualified vascular and endovascular surgeons and to pass the examinations required to achieve board certification in vascular surgery. To this end, we follow a philosophy of progressive independence and graduated responsibility.

Clinical Training Sites for Fellows

Fellows in our program rotate at three inpatient sites: NYU Langone’s Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System. Take a virtual tour to explore our residency and fellowship training sites.

Kimmel Pavilion

Kimmel Pavilion is a large, technologically advanced tertiary care center with eight hybrid, open, and endovascular operating suites. Here, fellows gain the following experience:

• supervising the vascular surgery service, with patients directly under their care
• participating in and performing both routine and difficult and complex vascular surgery and both open surgical and endovascular procedures
• directly overseeing general surgical residents, medical students, and nurse practitioners
• seeing patients in the offices of the vascular surgery attending faculty members

Bellevue

Bellevue, a major public hospital in New York City’s NYC Health + Hospitals Corporation, provides vascular surgical care to a diverse urban population and functions as the premier Level 1 Trauma Center in Manhattan. Here, vascular fellows encounter broad and in-depth experience in vascular trauma and caring for a population notable for its socioeconomics, languages spoken, and geographic origin. Although trainees see all aspects of vascular surgery at Bellevue, the site offers a particularly rich experience in thoracic aortic aneurysms and aortic dissections.

Manhattan Campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System

This site provides vascular surgical care to veterans and is the referral center for advanced vascular surgical care of several nearby Veterans Health Administration hospitals. Here, vascular fellows participate in all aspects of vascular surgical care for a patient population with often advanced and complex levels of disease.

• outpatient vascular intervention center, where both percutaneous arterial and venous interventions are performed in an outpatient setting
• academic outpatient Vein Center, which offers procedures for varicose veins and venous insufficiency, including ablation, microphlebectomy, and sclerotherapy
• Intersocietal Accreditation Commission–accredited noninvasive vascular laboratory, managed by the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
• New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM), where detailed instruction in vascular surgical techniques is offered
• outpatient clinics at all three inpatient training sites

Clinical Experience and Training for Fellows

The Vascular Surgery Fellowship provides the educational resources necessary for the development of proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic circulatory systems. We offer clinical and didactic learning in both the inpatient and outpatient areas. Clinical training in our programs covers the entire breadth of vascular and endovascular surgery and provides trainees with the skills, expertise, and confidence to practice at the highest levels. Typical numbers greatly exceed recommended minimum experience criteria in all categories. Fellows receive training in the following areas.

Carotid Artery and Cerebrovascular Disease

• evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of cerebrovascular disease
• carotid endarterectomy
• transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR)
• transfemoral carotid stenting
• advanced complex endovascular and open surgical approaches to cerebrovascular disease

Aortic Aneurysm

• evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of aortic pathology
• endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR)
• fenestrated endovascular aortic repair (FEVAR)
• percutaneous endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (PEVAR)
• thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR)
• branched and fenestrated devices for complex patterns of aortic disease
• treatment of aortic dissection
• open surgical management of aortic pathology

Lower Extremity Peripheral Arterial Disease

• evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of extremity arterial pathology, including both acute and chronic arterial disease
• traditional and complex endovascular procedures, including angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy, and thrombolysis
• open surgical techniques, including complex bypass surgery and other techniques

Venous Disease

• evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of venous pathology
• venous ablation, microphlebectomy, and other techniques for the treatment of varicose veins and venous insufficiency
• cosmetic treatment of venous lesions
• complex endovascular intervention for chronic deep venous disease, including iliocaval recanalization
• medical and interventional treatment of acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT), including thrombolysis and other techniques

Diabetes-Related Complications

• evaluation, diagnosis, management and treatment of diabetic foot complications
• lower extremity amputation and other management procedures
• collaboration with wound care specialists and exposure to the use of hyperbaric oxygen at the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Hyperbaric and Advanced Wound Healing Center

Mesenteric Vascular Conditions

• evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of mesenteric and renal artery vascular conditions
• acute and chronic mesenteric ischemia; open surgical and endovascular intervention
• renal artery pathology
• visceral and renal artery aneurysm intervention

Angioaccess for Hemodialysis

• evaluation, management, and intervention for patients requiring angioaccess
• management of access-related complications

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

• evaluation, diagnosis, management, and treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome
• treatment of venous, arterial, and neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome
• endovascular–thrombolysis for acute thrombosis
• open surgical techniques for thoracic outlet decompression

Vascular Trauma

• evaluation, diagnosis, management and treatment of both blunt and penetrating trauma using open surgical and endovascular management techniques

Rare Vascular Conditions

• congenital vascular malformations
• lymphatic disorders
• upper extremity ischemic conditions
• upper extremity vascular and ischemic conditions
• vasculitides

Didactic Teaching and Conferences for Fellows

Fellows’ academic education is enhanced by the pursuit of research projects and independent reading and investigation. Accordingly, they are provided with significant time for independent reading, research, and conference preparation.

The Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Weekly Conference takes place on Tuesday mornings from 7:00 to 8:00AM. This multidisciplinary conference includes presentations about research, review of core topics in vascular surgery, presentation about educational cases, discussion about ideal treatment strategies, review of current journal articles, and review of morbidity and mortality.

Research Opportunities for Fellows

Our division maintains active research programs both in the clinical and basic science areas. Our faculty are deeply involved in scholarly activity. Trainees are expected to participate in research projects during their tenure at NYU Langone.

Trainees routinely submit and present their research to regional and national vascular surgery conferences and meetings. Appropriate mentoring and infrastructure is provided, including the following:

• support for institutional review board (IRB) proposals and submissions
• support from interdisciplinary faculty
• participation in the Vascular Quality Initiative program
